The Montpelier Plantation is one of four "Plantation Inns" on Nevis and is often considered the most exclusive. Set high
in the hills of Nevis on 13 acres of land, it boasts 17 cottages surrounded by absolutely beautiful gardens. The inn focuses on the high standards of it's food, wine, and service. They employ 3 Nevisian
chefs and 3 European chefs. Much is made of it's cuisine and a happy house-party atmosphere All of the rooms are at 750 feet above sea level, and have wonderful terraces overlooking (albeit
distant) the Caribbean Sea. All of the "Great Houses" were traditionally built at this height as it is cooler and has fewer sandflies. The pool is absolutely stunning! The walls are hand painted in a
Caribbean style and will keep you mesmerized just exploring the painting's different scenes. As you would expect from an inn of this quality, the rates are not for everyone. I love to go
up for cocktails and watch the cruise ships in the distance. It is so peaceful and remote that you will swear you have Nevis all to yourself. In my opinion the only drawback is the distance to town and the
beach. It will take about 20 minutes to town and another 10 minutes to Pinney's Beach where they offer an outdoor shower, picnic pavilion, changing rooms, and a phone. This said they do offer a complimentary
shuttle bus, but how often this runs I am not sure. I highly recommend taking the bus, I have been driving on Nevis for almost 10 years now and this is still a tricky drive. All
in all though Montpelier is definitely worth examining whether you plan on staying there or not. Oh and by the way, a little tidbit of gossip. This is where Princess Diana stayed while visiting Nevis after
her separation. She was on Nevis for several days in January 1993. Being a Princess Diana fan, you can imagine how thrilled I was to see her. The paparazzi left her alone for the most part, so it was
not uncommon to see her around the island. What Fun! Yes she was stunningly beautiful and equally charming! |
